About The PUC

The Public Utilities Commission was established in 2001 incorporating the traditional regulatory bodies, the Office of Electricity Supply and the Office of Telecommunications to regulate the electricity, water, and telecommunications sectors in Belize. These sectors are essential commodities for any economy therefore the work of the PUC is critical to Belize’s economy. The PUC’s mandate is legally obliged by the Public Utilities Commission Substantive Act Chapter 223 Revised Edition 2020.

Organizational Structure

Responsibilities

Secure that all reasonable demands for utility services are satisfied

Secure that license holders are able to finance the carrying on of the activities which they are authorized by their license to carry on;

Protect the interest of consumers in respect of the tariffs charged and the other terms of supply; the continuity of supply; and the quality of the utility services supplied;

Promote efficiency and economy on the part of persons authorized by licences to supply utility services to consumers;

Promote research into and the development and use of new techniques by or on behalf of persons authorized by a licence to supply utility services;

Protect the public from dangers arising from the supply of utility services;

Secure the establishment and maintenance of machinery for promoting the health and safety of persons employed in the supplying of utility services.

Our Team

The PUC has a total of twenty plus employees (20+) inclusive of a Chairman who leads the organization and is guided by a Board of Commissioners. Three directors lead the integral services of the commission including Water, Electricity, and Telecommunications.

The Public Utilities Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
