ONLY A LICENSED WIREMAN can make an Electrical Design Submission, and submissions MUST BE WITHIN their Licence Category. Here’s a list of Licensed Wiremen and their respective Categories.
Wiring Standards
The Public Utilities Commission follows the National Electrical Code (NEC), also called the NFPA 70. To assist licensed wiremen, the PUC has compiled a reference guide to access a free “read only” copy below.
Electricty Sector
The Electricity Sector of the Public Utilities Commission was formed by the Commission in order to regulate all entities that are authorized under the Public Utilities Act Cap. 223 revised edition 2011 and the Electricity Act Cap 221 revised edition 2020.

Other Licensees in Belize who supply power and associated energy to the BEL and may also self-supply, namely, Hydro Maya Limited (HML) (hydro facility), Belize Cogeneration Energy Limited (BELCOGEN) (using bagasse fuel), Santander Sugar Energy Limited (SSEL) and Blair Athol Power Company Limited (BAPCOL) (using No. 6 HFO fuel oil).
Main Activities
Major activities undertaken by the PUC’s Electricity Sector include:
- Review of Tariffs for national licensee Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), every 4 years (Full Tariff Review (FTR) and every year (Annual Review (AR);
- Licensee compliance Audits;
- Reliability and efficiency review for licensees;
- Continuously review, update and approve codes of practices for licensees. For BEL this includes the review of their Generation Code, their Transmission Grid Code, their Payment of Bills Code, and their Supply (Distribution) Code.
- Ensure there is competition in Generation preparation and management of Generation Request for Proposals (RFPs)
- Power Quality Audits;
- Power System Engineering analysis;
- Review and commentary on licensees least cost expansion plans;
- Review of Cost and Tariff structures for the sale of electricity in Belize.
- Manage the wiring and wireman industry in Belize.

Licensed Wiremen in Belize
No person other than a Licensed Wireman shall construct, repair, alter or do any work whatsoever to, or interfere with any part of any electrical installation connected or intended to be connected to the public electric lines, and the owner or occupier of any premises on which such installation shall be situated shall not knowingly permit any person not being a licensed wireman to do so.
